The library system is honored to host the highly revered choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess. He will discuss his new memoir, Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly, as well as his current Social Justice Leaders video series

Raised and schooled locally in Santa Fe, NM, Burgess went on to found the preeminent modern dance company in the nation, based in Washington D.C. As artistic director, his work explores the idea of cultural confluence with many of his dances focusing on the "hyphenated person"--someone who is of mixed ethnic or cultural heritage--and the emotions of belonging and acceptance.

Burgess has served as Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. State Department for over two decades, promoting international cultural dialogue through the global language of dance. In 2016, he was named the Smithsonian's first-ever Choreographer-in-Residence--a position he continues to hold--at the National Portrait Gallery.

Burgess' dance works have earned him numerous awards and accolades and have been performed in renowned venues worldwide. In 2013, he performed at the White House at the invitation of President Barack Obama.
