ATOMICON! In-Person

Atomicon Logo

It's back!

On August 31, Atomicon returns to the Atomic City.

On Saturday, August 31st, join us for the 3rd Atomicon at the Los Alamos Public Library. We will host a day of fandom and excitement that includes costume contests, crafts, adventures, and more! Check out the panels of writers and illustrators who have published their own comics and games. Take part in workshops where you learn world-building and illustration from experts.

Be sure to visit our Fuller Lodge Vendor Hall, next door to Mesa Public Library, to explore all the creative works of local and regional artists. The Vendor Hall is hosted by the Los Alamos Arts Council. At Fuller Lodge, you'll also have a chance to exprience the fully-immersive world of Coyote & Crow, where Jeopardy champ and gamemaster Weckiai Rennila will lead a full walk through of the game for registered players at 10:00am and again at 2:00pm

11:00am to 12:00pm Workshop: Model like you mean it
Learn the art of posing for artists and how to show off your amazing cosplay to full effect from a professional artist model, then sign up to participate as a model during the Cosplay Draw-a-thon. Models in the Draw-a-thon will receive branded Atomicon swag. Lessons from professional, Santa Fe-based model Zeus.

11:30am to 12:35pm Workshop: How do I comic?

A fast-paced, hands-on look at what makes a comic different from any other art form. Bram Meehan guides you to start thinking about how comics work and how to approach making your own. All supplies are provided. Best for ages 10 to 100, but all are welcome.

12:30pm to 1:25pm Panel: Welcome to our world
One of the most important aspects of storytelling is getting the audience to believe they're in your world. Moderator Bram Meehan leads the discussion with John Sumrow, Shawn Patrick Boyd, Weyodi OldBear.

1:00pm to 2:30pm Cosplay Draw-a-thon
It's a bird, it's a plane, its super...! Who knows who we are drawing at Atomicon, but you can bet there are a variety of characters on hand and plenty of newly trained models. Twenty short poses of varying lengths. Perfect for all ages and abilities. Materials provided, or bring your own! Led by Ken Nebel of the Los Alamos Life Drawing Group.

1:30pm to 2:25pm Workshop: Making a mini

2:30pm to 3:25pm Panel: Ideas take form

3:30pm to 4:25pm Keynote Speaker: Jeff Benham presents Truth, Justice, and the American: How Comics Animate Culture.

4:30pm to 4:50pm Costume Parade

Costume Contest

The costume contest is a day-long event with three ways to enter.

[1] During the day from 10:00 to 4:30pm, judges will be secretly circulating through Fuller Lodge and the lower and upper levels of Mesa Public Library.

[2] Enter virtually by texting a photo of yourself in costume while standing in the lobby of either the library or Fuller Lodge to 505-709-5489.

[3] Join the Costume Parade! At 4:30pm, the Costume Parade and the awarding of prizes begin inside Mesa Public Library in the lower-level rotunda. Walk in the Costume Parade as a group or on your own. Audience reactions and applause help the judges decide on winners. Prizes are awarded to costumes in the stealth judging, in the photo judging, and in the parade judging.

What are the judges looking for? Creativity, humor, imagination, craft, dedication, accuracy, intricacy, beauty, cuteness, or ferocity! Costumes might be store-bought or homemade.

You can be a character from a book, comic, or movie. Perhaps you're dressed as someone well-known and popular or as your own comic book character. Maybe you’re not a character at all, but a kind of fantasy person or creature.

Want to share more about your character with other con-goers? Have a photo handy to show people who ask. One of the best things about a con is telling other people about your favorite fandom!
