Join us in honoring the rich and diverse traditions of Hispanic and Latino heritage in the United States! Pick up a free art supply kit at either library location and let your creativity shine.

Your artwork can be inspired by history, culture, visual arts, culinary traditions, music, notable figures, or the everyday contributions of friends and family from Latin or Hispanic communities. You’re welcome to focus on New Mexico’s unique regional Hispanic heritage or take a broader national perspective. The only requirement is that your artwork must be tiny!

Important Dates:

  • Sept. 1–26: Pick up your free art kit from Mesa Public Library or White Rock Branch Library.

  • Sept. 1–26: Submit your completed artwork along with a filled-out registration form.

  • Oct. 1–15: Artwork will be on display at the library location where it was submitted.

  • Oct. 15–31: Pick up your artwork from the same library. Art not picked up by the deadline will be discarded.

Art Show Guidelines:

  • Participants must be ages 13 and up. Younger library users are encouraged to join the Youth Services celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Young artists will be invited to decorate individual tiles for a mural.

  • The Library will distribute 90 free art kits, available while supplies last.

  • Kits will be given out to participants who commit to participating in the show. We will record contact info when the kit is picked up to allow us to send out reminders.

  • One kit per artist. Kits must be picked up in person.

  • Each kit includes a miniature canvas with easel, paint, brush, and clay. Materials can be combined for a mixed media piece. Artists can also choose to stick with a single medium. As a final option, artists can also make two distinct pieces, one using the canvas and one using the clay.

  • Artists may use additional personal art supplies, but submissions must remain tiny, within the scale suggested by the original kit materials.

  • Artwork will be displayed with the artist’s name and the title of the piece at one of the two library locations.

  • The Library reserves the right to exclude submissions that do not follow the guidelines or the spirit of the celebration.

Younger artists are also invited to create art to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Pick up a white 12x12 peel-and-stick tile and decorate it using markers, acrylic paint, or decoupage!. All of the tiles will be combined into a mural to be displayed on a wall in the Zone on the lower level of the Mesa Public Library. The dates for the youth art activity are aligned with the adult program. Please pick up your tile at the youth desk or the White Rock Branch Library.
